Chinese Furniture

The renowned Ming style can be divided into three periods. The “Ming Shi Jaiju – Ming Style” refers to the shape of cabinets from the first period of the Ming dynasty (1304-1644). During the second half of the Ming period there was a decrease in the supply of expensive wood types like huanghuali, zitan and jichimu. However, there were perfect alternatives in the form of jumu, a medium hardwood, and later hongmu jumu – both high quality types of elm. Furniture from this period and the following Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) is also regarded as part of the Ming Style.

A Ming cabinet consists of solid panels which are fixed to a solid framework via wooden fastenings. The inside has a number of loose shelves and a fixed shelf under which two sliding drawers have been incorporated. The cabinet is finished with a transparent finishing coat.
